One of the most favorite chores I do as a mom is singing Celestine to sleep. Naturally, lullabies have become big part of my daughter’s bed time. I do it without fail—I can’t recall not ever humming or singing to her while trying to get her to sleep. (Believe me, it’s not an easy task. But that’s for another day.) Eventually, she too had become reliant on my songs—sometimes all it needed was a line or two for her to doze off . Even now that she’s sleeping all on her own—meaning all we have to do is give her the bottle and wait until she’s knocked out—it cuts down the entire process (made up mostly of tossing, turning and crying) when I sing to her.
Of course, I have to have some sort of playlist! It’s not that easy to pull random songs out of a hat and sing them. So I’m sharing to you my baby friendly, go-to lullabies set! I’m hoping she gets to read this blog post in the future and actually remember that I sang these songs to her.
1. Que Sera Sera
A sentimental favorite.
My mom sang this to me when I was little, so of course I had to pass it on to Celestine too! It’s an old song, but it still hits the spot.
When I was just a little girl
I asked my mother, “What will I be?
Will I be pretty, will I be rich?”
Here’s what she said to me:
“Que Sera, Sera, Whatever will be, will be
The future’s not ours to see Que Sera, Sera
What will be, will be.”
2. Sa Ugoy ng Duyan (In the Cradle’s Rocking)
Every Filipino mother’s go-to Tagalog song. You can’t blame us, this just makes you feel so motherly! This is one of the tunes that I hum to Celestine on a daily basis.
3. When I Was Your Man
What is a heartbreak song doing in a child’s playlist? Well, I happen to know the lyrics of this song by heart and when your baby is wailing and you have to rack brains for the next song to calm her down, you kinda immediately go to the thing you know best. Thus, this.
4. A Whole New World
It would be tragedy if Celestine didn’t get introduced to Disney when her mom herself is a Disney baby. I really made sure that I sang this to Celestine. Plus, there’s just something magical about this song and I feel like I’m taking her to that magic carpet ride every time I sing this.
Another very singable Disney hit. Mine’s a mix of Lea Salonga/Christina Aguilera because God knows I can’t get the lyrics of either version right.
6. La Vie En Rose
I fell in love with Cristin Milioti’s version and I haven’t been able to get it out of my head since that How I Met your Mother episode. But more often than not, I just hum rather than sing this to Celestine. It’s beautiful either way.
Give your heart and soul to me
And life will always be
La vie en rose
7. Fly Me to the Moon
Celestine’s favorite (or so we assume)! My mom and I always love singing this to Celestine, and judging by how she sways her head and twirls her wrist, she loves this too.
Fill my heart with song and let me sing for ever more
You are all I long for
All I worship and adore
In other words, please be true
In other words, I love you
What’s great about all this singing is that Celestine has started humming with me! And there’s no better feeling, especially when I get very few chances in a week to do so, than stroking her hair and watching her drift to sleep while she tries her best to keep up with all the humming. 🙂
